Topic: "The upside of being female on the journey to the frontiers of research"
Date: November 24, 1999
Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Location: CARLING LAB 3 - 3G13 - Lab 3.3.G13*
Join us for an informative evening with guest speakers Dr. Deryn Fogg and Dr. Susannah Scott, chemistry professors at the University of Ottawa, who will share their experiences from female perspectives in a male-dominated field as they travel forward in their respective areas of research. After their presentation the floor will be open for discussion, so come prepared with your questions!
Deryn Fogg received her M.Sc. degree from the University of Waterloo in 1988 and her Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 1994. After postdoctoral work at MIT, she joined the faculty at the University of Ottawa in 1997. Her research focuses on inorganic and polymer chemistry and catalysis. Awards include the Premier's Research Excellence Award (1999), Canada Foundation for Innovation Researcher (1998), the Polanyi Prize in Chemistry (1997), the Union Carbide Innovation Recognition Award (1994), and Killam, NSERC, and Ontario graduate fellowships.
Susannah Scott received her B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1987. At Iowa State University of Science and Technology, she studied reactions of oxygen with aqueous chromium and was awarded the Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry in 1991. Following a stint as a NATO Science Fellow at the CNRS (France), she joined the faculty at the University of Ottawa in 1994, where she is now Associate Professor of Chemistry. She teaches Environmental Chemistry and Inorganic Reactions at the undergraduate level and supervises graduate research in Catalysis and Environmental Chemistry.

WISE Ottawa-Carleton is excited to announce that Dr. Claudine Simson, vice president of Global External Research and Intellectual Property for Nortel Networks, will be our guest speaker for a dinner presentation on February 15, 2000. The title of her talk will be "Women and Technology". Be sure to mark this event in your calendar - we will provide the details as they are finalized.
Thank you to all those who attended our first event of the year, the Wine and Cheese Networking evening from September 22nd, 1999. It was wonderful to see old and new faces alike, and many took the opportunity to make new contacts in the community.
(a) Congratulations to Dr. Louise Mallory who accepted the Women in Trades and Technology Award for Education this past April. Dr. Mallory, a professor of engineering at the University of Ottawa, was honoured for her role in providing a strong positive role model for others.
(b) The next CCWEST conference will be held in St. John's, Newfoundland in July 6-8, 2000. For details, please visit the website: www.mun.ca/cwse
(c) WISE Ottawa-Carleton would like to apply for affinity chapter status with IEEE, which would entitle the WISE Ottawa-Carleton group to additional funding opportunities and other resources. If you are an IEEE member , please email cennett@uottawa.ca to receive information.
(d) Ottawa has been chosen to host the "12th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists" (ICWES12) in July 27-31, 2002. The conference occurs once every three years in a different location around the world. With the theme "Women in a Knowledge-based Society", the organizers hope to bring together highly skilled women scientists, engineers and students to challenge the world to a new vision of women’s roles and contributions in the areas of science, engineering and technology. Sub-themes of the conference will be "Women in Research and Development", "Women and Technology" and "Balancing Work and Family Life: Achieving Harmony". Technical papers and papers on gender issues and research will be welcome. At ICWES11, the bid from Canada was very well received. The vote to support the choice of Ottawa was unanimous (31 against 0). It was heartening to hear how people were already excited about coming to this event. So plan to attend! We promise you a rich and rewarding experience at ICWES12! Monique Frize, Chair of ICWES12. Visit the web site at http://www.carleton.ca/wise/icwes12/icwes12.htm
