    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome back to another year with WISE! WISE's membership has continued to grow in the past year, and we now total more than 150 members! Our membership includes regular members, student members from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, and corporate members. With the interesting schedule that we have planned so far this year, I'm sure that we'll continue to attract many more!

A focus for WISE for the upcoming year is to expand our boundaries and introduce ourselves to other women's organizations in the Capital Region. Our efforts start with a joint event with the Professional Engineers Ontario's Women in Engineering Advisory Committee (PEO/WEAC) which marks the First Claudette MacKay-Lassonde Memorial Fall Forum. In addition to being the first woman elected as President of PEO and her many other accomplishments involving the promotion of women in engineering, Claudette founded the WISE organization in 1977.

Also, in late November, we'll be working together with Wired Woman, Webgrrls and the CWC (Canadian Women in Communications) to host an evening event with guest speaker, Carol Stevenson from Lucent Technologies. Further details about this event will be provided in the next newsletter. It is our hope to connect and share experiences with these women from the Region.

As usual, the first newsletter of the year introduces the new WISE Executive. Over my past three years' involvement with WISE, I have met many interesting and intelligent women through WISE, several of whom have become good friends of mine. The women on this year's exec are certainly representative of the friendly, supportive environment that WISE promotes. I hope you'll join us at as many of our events as possible this year!

    With warmest regards,

    Colleen Ennett

    5.0 ICWES12 UPDATE

One particular initiative that several WISE members have been involved with is the organization of the ICWES12 Conference (the 12th International Conference for Women Engineers and Scientists) that will be held in Ottawa in July 2002. It's hard to believe that the conference is less than two years away, and there's still so much to do.

The ICWES12 committee expects to launch the Call for Papers this fall with their new website (www.icwes12.org - not active yet, but bookmark it and check back -- current location: www.carleton.ca/wise/icwes12/icwes12.htm), and will begin to receive summaries from potential conference attendees next summer! There are about 15 WISE members on the committee of about 35 people. If you're interested in getting involved or finding out more information about the conference, please contact Monique Frize, the conference chair, at Monique_Frize@carleton.ca, 520-2600 x8229.

6.0 CORPORATE SPONSORS' JOB ADVERTISEMENTS THROUGH WISE

Up until now, WISE has not advertised jobs to our members except by word-of-mouth at our meetings from one-on-one conversations if the situation arose. Following a quick survey of our members, we have decided to offer only to our WISE corporate sponsors the opportunity to advertise jobs directly to our members. This would mean that only companies who sponsor WISE would be allowed to advertise jobs to our members. This would not guarantee any aspect

of the company's policies and WISE would not be responsible for investigating the job opportunity.

By allowing sponsors to advertise to our members, this meets one of WISE's mandates to open doors to new opportunities for our members. The job list with new listings will be emailed out to our members once a week (as required) and will also be posted on our website.

We will also offer our members the option to opt out of this job advertising mailing list. If you would like to be exempt from this job mailing list, please contact Colleen Ennett (ennett@canada.com).
