We're looking forward to our Annual General Meeting on June 5, and hope to see some new members join our executive committee. We'll also have guest speaker Monique Frize join us with her talk on Technology and Society. See the detailed descriptions of the duties involved with each position, and put your name forward to join our executive! Being an executive member of WISE is a fun and rewarding experience without demanding a lot of your time. We look forward to another successful year with your help!

Guest Speaker: Dr. Monique Frize, NSERC/Nortel Chair for WISE in Ontario,
Professor of Engineering at Carleton University and University of Ottawa

6:00 - 7:00 p.m.: AGM (summary of activities of this year and election
of next year's executive committee - information on executive positions below)

7:00 - 7:30 p.m.: Pizza and drinks offered

7:30 - 8:00 p.m.: Dr. Monique Frize will discuss three issues related to
the development and design of technology:
1. Impact of technology on society
2. The role of ethics and social factors on the development of
technology
3. The potential impact of gender on technology.

WISE Executive Positions

Do you wish to get more involved and participate in directing the Ottawa WISE Chapter? The following position descriptions are delineated for you to better understand the structure of our Executive and to consider participating by allowing your name to stand for Election at the Annual General Meeting. Please inform Colleen Ennett if you are interested in any of these positions at
ennett@canada.com or by calling 722-9430. (Term of positions from June 2001 to May 2002)

President
- represent and promote the chapter
- set objectives for the year with the other executive members
- organize and chair executive meetings
- liaise with other organizations and other WISE chapters
- provide leadership to the chapter

Vice-President
- assist and support the President in carrying out her duties
- assume duties of the President in her absence Treasurer/ Membership
- maintain up-to-date financial records
- maintain up-to-date membership records
- receive applications/renewal membership information
- exercise signing authority with the President on all chapter documents

Program Coordinator
- organize chapter events (4 to 6 per year)
- this includes contacting speaker, setting up facility, providing input to newsletter. Note that the entire Executive assists in finding contacts.

Newsletter/Public Relations
- prepare and distribute newsletter (research articles, request items from members)
- act as prime contact for any public relations requirements
- search out opportunities to provide relations for the Chapter

Secretary
- write and distribute Minutes of all Executive meetings
- get mail and distribute it as necessary

Education Outreach
- coordinate, liaise or establish programs with schools and other established programs such as Pathmakers and Let's Talk Science
- provide support to and liaise with the student branches at the Universities of Ottawa and Carleton

CCWEST Representative
- act as liaison between the Ottawa-Carleton Chapter and the Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science and Technology

U of O Coordinator (student branch)
- provides leadership to the Executive of the student branch at the University of Ottawa
- act as liaison between the student branch and the Ottawa-Carleton Chapter

Carleton U Coordinator (student branch)
- provides leadership to the Executive of the student branch at Carleton University
- act as liaison between the student branch and the Ottawa-Carleton Chapter

2.0 ICWES12 UPDATE

The 12th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES12) is a dynamic international conference which occurs every three years in a different location around the world. The ICWES12 Conference brings together engineers, scientists, social scientists and students to challenge the world to a new vision of women's roles and contributions in the areas of science, engineering and technology.

The event will bring important issues such as the environment and the impact of technology on women and society to the attention of all participants and the public. The Conference consists of a series of presentations and posters on technical topics and on issues of concern to women engineers and scientists.

The Conference will be held from Saturday, July 27 to Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Ottawa.

The Call for Papers for ICWES12 has been mailed out and the new website also has all of the information about the conference:
www.icwes12.org.

Important deadlines are as follows:
Paper and panel summaries: July 15, 2001
Full paper, panel and poster submissions: October 1, 2001
Notification of acceptance: January 15, 2002
Camera ready version: March 1, 2002
