On behalf of the WISE executive committee, I would like to welcome all of you to a new year with WISE. Our committee is devoted to organizing exciting events starting this September with our get-to-know each other BBQ and our get-to-compete with each other golf tournament. We will also have a few surprises in store for you throughout the year as our strong committee is in the process of developing a great idea that will surely bring together our student branches, the Ottawa-Carleton Chapter and the workforce. We will keep you in suspense for now and don’t forget to follow our website and the next newsletters for updates.
We encourage you to contribute to WISE by renewing your membership before the end of the month. We are looking forward to meeting all of you at our future events. Bring a friend! In the meanwhile, do not forget that you can always contact us by mail or by e-mail for questions or suggestions.
Regards,

Colleen Michelle Ennett
Because of her passion for engineering, Colleen thoroughly enjoys the opportunities to share her experiences, in hopes of encouraging other women to enter this profession. Colleen is among many other WISE members who are helping to organize the upcoming ICWES12 (International Conference for Women in Engineering and Science) conference that will be held in Ottawa next July (coming up quickly!). The conferences on women in science and engineering that she has attended in the past have been fascinating, and she finds it interesting to learn how women are changing these fields. Colleen is working on her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Carleton University, and hopes to finish by the end of 2002 (better to be optimistic, right?!). Her summers are busy with ultimate frisbee games, and in the winter, she snowboards. After recently giving up her car, Colleen has found an enormous amount of time for reading on OCTranspo. So far so good, but we'll see how it goes when she's waiting for the bus in the cold and snow!

Chantal Cloutier
Chantal has a bachelor of mechanical engineering from Carleton University and just recently completed (part-time) a Master of Arts in Defence Management and Policy from the Royal Military College of Canada. Chantal is a Major in the Canadian Armed Forces and is currently serving as a Staff Officer and Aide-de-Camp for the Minister of National Defence. Luckily this job involves a lot of travel as she loves planning trips for herself and she particularly enjoys exploring exotic locations.

Christina Catley
Christina became involved with WISE last year as the secretary. She is looking forward to helping organizing events this year and hopes everyone will become involved! Christina finished her Bachelors degree in Computer Systems Engineering last year and is currently working on her Masters thesis in Computer Systems with an emphasis on medical applications. One of her major interests in WISE is promoting female enrolment in faculties such as Engineering, since from experience she knows when other female students are scarce, one can be pretty lonely! Hobbies include anything involving water (swimming, windsurfing, sailing), tennis, hiking, skiing and gardening.

Lise Winnie Beauchamp
Lise is eager to promote the involvement of women in non-traditional fields
such as science and engineering. She has been a key leader in the
establishment of the University of Ottawa student branch as finance
coordinator and event organizer. As part of her duties, she has organized
very successful industry tours and a resume writing/interview workshop. She
will provide leadership to this year's student branch. Currently working at
Fisher Scientific Ltd. in Nepean as a Customer Service Representative, she
deals with a wide range of clients including biotechnology companies,
government agencies and hospitals. Since May 2000, she holds a bachelor is in Sciences with a specialization in biology-biotechnology from the University of Ottawa. She absolutely adores going to the movies, playing with her ferrets as well as nature walks.
She is presently learning Spanish and about to start yoga. Although she
tends to seek activities that are relaxing, she's a very energetic person
that loves getting involved!

Jennifer Furlong
This is Jennifer's fourth year as a member of WISE at Carleton. She likes to be involved with WISE as it presents science students with numerous valuable networking opportunities with other professionals in the field. The university chapter is presenting her, along with the rest of the student branch executive, the opportunity to set up a mentoring program for young women who are pursuing studies in science, technology and engineering. Jennifer is a fourth year Biochemistry student at Carleton University, and spends her summers working at the National Research Council as a WES student (Women in Engineering and Science). In her spare time. she is an active member of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada, as well as a member of several choirs.
