Presentation Abstract:
The ways in which science is taught in the Western tradition generally
assume that science is neutral and that knowledge is generated unaffected by
the culture of the society or the beliefs of the scientist. Even today we
tend to think these same things. How do these beliefs affect the kinds of
people that are attracted to pursuing a science career? Or the retention or
career success of science professionals?

Dr. Dyck will use the Medicine Wheel of the Plains Indians to examine what
is science and to see if so doing explains some of the reasons for the lack
of women and Aboriginals who succeed in science education or science
careers. This involves explaining what a Medicine Wheel is, using it as the
analytical tool to dissect science, and then examining ways in which we
normally recruit or attempt to retain people in science.
