WISE Ottawa Chapter November 2002 Newsletter
1. Upcoming Event: Thursday, November 28th Wine and Cheese It has been a long month- come and relax, unwind and meet some new friends! As always, everyone is welcome. Networking Skills and Mentoring Opportunities: It is said that networking lands over 50% (some say as high as 60%-75%) of jobs. Networking is the planned process by which one becomes known, through business and social meetings, to people who can provide information about job openings, leads, personal contacts, and companies that are hiring. Networking opens up endless opportunities. It is just not about finding a job but it is about enhancing your possibilities for success. “It’s not what you know, but who you know that counts”? Of course, for most of us networking is not always easy, like anything else it is a learned process. Come learn how to enhance your networking skills and put what you have learned into action at our wine and cheese event (bring your business cards !). The wine and cheese event will also launch WISE’s new mentorship program. Location: Carleton University, Minto CASE room 2014 (corner of Campus Avenue and Library Road) 2. WISE Mentorship Program Launched! Are you someone who requires mentoring (most of us do!) or do you feel that you have valuable skills and experience that you would like to share (most of us have!)? If you answered yes to either or both of these questions why not become involved with WISE’s new mentorship program, developed by Rong Liu. (Thank you Rong!) The objective of WISE’s mentoring program is to develop partnerships between WISE professionals and WISE university students, with the aim of helping students make a successful transition from the classroom to the workplace. Both mentors and protégées are needed so why not sign up using our online application form: http://www.wise-ottawa.ca/wise_mentor.html. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Call for membership renewals. New lower fees! Our membership fees have been lowered to $25 for professionals (students still have the same low rate of $10). We’re hoping this will make the call for membership renewals easier on your pocketbooks! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Melek G. Akben-WISE Memorial Scholarship WISE’s new scholarship for WISE student members is nearly finalized. We will start accepting applications in January (for the February 28th deadline)- if you know of a student member who has helped to promote the entry of women into the fields of science and engineering, please encourage them to apply. Detailed information will be posted on the website in December and the scholarship will be officially launched at our January event (details to follow). --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to our sponsors!
