He is the Director of Carleton's M.Eng. in Telecommunications Technology Management program. Tony was a Director at Bell-Northern Research (BNR) from 1988 to 1991 and a Senior Consultant for BNR from 1991 to 1996. Tony has taught for the Executive M.B.A. program offered by Queen's University since 1996, and for the Human Resources Branch of Industry Canada since1989. Tony’s main interests are in the areas of innovation, technology, and product development. Tony has come highly recommended as an inspirational speaker- sure to motivate and inform all the job-seekers out there! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Tribute to Melek Akben ‘A Great Loss for the Community’ On September 18th, 2002, Melek Akben passed away from cancer. Well-known for her kind-heartedness, Melek was a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Ottawa and a dedicated member of WISE Ottawa. Aside from being one of the most active WISE members, Melek volunteered her time on a variety of committees dedicated to women in engineering and science, such as the WISE Ottawa Executive, ICWES12 and a committee of women in engineering at the University of Ottawa. Always eager to share her enthusiasm with the up-and-coming engineers, Melek will be sadly missed by numerous women engineers and scientists in the Ottawa area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Proposal for WISE-Ottawa’s Melek Akben Memorial Scholarship To commemorate Melek Akben’s contributions to women in engineering, WISE is proposing to offer a scholarship in her name. The scholarship will be open to undergraduate WISE students from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. The University of Ottawa will be administering the scholarship and accepting donations from faculty members wishing to honor Melek. More information about the scholarship (criteria, essay topic, monetary value) will be provided in an upcoming Wine and Cheese event. Any suggestions for essay topics are welcome (e-mail pres@wise-ottawa.ca). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Queen’s University Conference on Women In Engineering: Different People, Different Paths What: An annual conference hosted by the student’s of Queen’s University for students from across Canada. Meet the WISE Executive Christina Catley, President Christina recently completed her Master’s degree in Systems and Computer Engineering and has just started her Ph.D at Carleton University focusing on medical informatics and integrating clinical decision support systems. As a systems engineer she has experienced firsthand the relatively low percentage of women in engineering, so she is thrilled to be involved with WISE hoping to ‘make a difference’. Christina has been a member of WISE Ottawa since 2000 and served as the programs coordinator last year. Fun-time activities include sailing, skiing, tennis, hiking and renovating house with her husband. Colleen Ennett, Ex-President An avid ultimate player and snowboarder, Colleen is active in the community supporting women students in science and engineering. Following a student roundtable discussion at the ICWES12 conference this summer, Colleen has established a mailing list for students from across Canada and the U.S. to interact and share ideas for promoting WISE organizations at the university level. Anyone interested in joining this email group, please contact her (ennett@canada.com). Colleen is finishing her PhD thesis at Carleton University in Biomedical Engineering. Cana Balay - Web Coordinator Cana is an engineer combining both electrical and industrial engineering backgrounds with refreshed skills in software engineering and computer sciences. Cana completed her bachelor degrees in engineering at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1998, she completed the O-Vitesse Software Engineering program in Carleton University and University of Ottawa initiated by the National Research Council, Universities and major High-Tech companies in Ottawa. She currently works in telecom industry. Cana is interested in developments in high-tech and education, enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family. She is the mother of one girl and two boys, grandmother of one girl and one boy. She is an active member of WISE since 1998 and has served as web coordinator of www.wise-ottawa.ca for 3 years. Dr. Rong Liu, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Carleton University. Dr. Rong Liu received her PhD from Deakin University, Australia, and then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Alberta, Canada, for two years. She joined Carleton University in 2000. She is working in the area of Solid Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics and Composite Materials.Rong is a member of: The Education Outreach in the Executive of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), Ottawa. The Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), Canada. The Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Composites Engineering (ICCE) and a reviewer of the journal of Composites Engineering. Mary Jo – Secretary Mary is a professional engineer with seven years of experience in process development and manufacturing engineering. She has worked with medical devices, communications equipment, and automotive parts. Before this, Mary went to Queen's University where she was also a member of WISE and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
